When I read the other day about how much time I spend on my laptop, I realized that I use more than my MacBook Pro. It was like I got a new car every time I went back to my office to pick up a document. It’s not like I have so much paper in my office that I don’t need to use my laptop. And that’s okay. It’s the things that do work, that are important to me and I don’t need to think about.
This, I think, is like thinking. Some people need to think about something and they like it. Some people need the space to think and they like that too. In that sense, I see my laptop as my journal. I like to write in it. I spend more time on it than on any of my other computers (other than my phone).
Although we can all tell you that you’ve got a better laptop than I do, the fact is that your laptop has something to do with being able to think. It’s not being the most efficient, but it’s not being useless either. It’s not just a matter of having a more powerful laptop. The way you use your laptop will affect how you think. And just because you don’t think about it doesn’t mean that you don’t care about it.
So let’s get this straight, I dont think I get as much work done on a computer as you, but you are a better laptop than I am.
This simple fact is a big part of why I love our work. It is very much based on the idea that, regardless of how we think about it, our work is the result of what we are thinking.
